(April 28, 2026) Improvements to 4th Street will expand to the intersections of Gaines and Brown Streets beginning May 4. Both intersections will be reduced to one lane during reconstruction. Work will begin in the northern half of each intersection and then transition to the southern half.
Gaines St travel impacts are as follows:
- There will be no north or southbound travel on Gaines between 4th and 5th St
- Southbound Gaines from 4th St will be open
- Semis will need to use Harrison to 5th St, to Western, to 4th St, to Gaines
Work taking place between Pine and Telegraph Rd is expected to be complete mid-to-late May before moving east. Storm sewer and intersection improvements at 4th and Fillmore are estimated wrap up in early to mid-June.
Travel restrictions will change as work progresses.
Please stay alert, follow posted detours, or consider an alternative route.
(April 17, 2026) The intersection of 4th and Fillmore will be closed from Tuesday, April 21, through early Thursday, April 23, pending weather. The closure is for the installation of a new storm sewer through the intersection. Please follow the signed detour or choose an alternate route.
(April 2, 2026) Changes to the 4th Street and Fillmore Intersection Detour: To help support travel on 4th Street, we have opened one lane of travel for passenger vehicles only through the intersection. This may be temporary, pending adjacent work. IMPORTANT NOTE: Semis and other large vehicles and equipment need to use the detour at Marquette Street to River Drive to Division Street.

(March 25, 2026) Improvements to 4th Street will be kicking off the construction season on Monday, March 30. Work will resume in two locations requiring closure and detours: Pine Street to Telegraph Road, and at the intersection of 4th and Fillmore Streets. Travel restrictions will change again in four to six weeks as work progresses.
Please stay alert, follow posted detours, or consider an alternative route.
Detour:
(December 19, 2025) Improvements to 4th Street between Pine and Telegraph will pause for the winter. The road is expected to reopen by Tuesday, December 23, with resurfacing resuming in the spring.
(October 17, 2025) Resurfacing on W 4th St will require closure of the intersections at Oak, Wilkes, and Sturdevant beginning October 20, through October 31, for pavement removal and ADA sidewalk improvements.
(September 26, 2025) This spring, the city initiated a significant $14.1 million, multi-year project to resurface and convert portions of 3rd and 4th Streets between Telegraph and River Drive, starting with 3rd Street. As we approach fall, work will begin on 4th Street, starting with the closure of the road between Pine Street and Thode Court on Monday, September 29. Drivers should follow the signed detour or find an alternate route during this initial phase. Find the detour map below.
The resurfacing will be done in sections, focusing on areas west of Division this fall and winter. Work will then continue west to east when work resumes in the spring. The first areas to be worked on this fall include the sections between Pine Street and Thode Court, and Thode Court and Telegraph Road. Additional sections may be completed this winter, if the weather permits.
Once resurfacing on 4th Street between Telegraph and Harrison is complete in the fall/winter of 2026, the street will be converted to two-way traffic between Marquette and River Drive. This will involve re-striping the road and updating traffic signals at intersections.
