Being displaced from your home and recovering from an incident or disaster can be challenging and we are here to help.

If your evacuation is due to disaster, we will link on-going updates on response and recovery here.  The resources found below can also help guide you through the recovery process.

If your displacement is due to an individual impact event such as fire or an unsafe building, use the resources found below to start the recovery process.

Assembly Point: If an assembly point has been established, that information will be provided here.

Check-In: If check-in is required to account for displaced individuals, that information will be provided here.

Sheltering

If you need assistance with sheltering call the American Red Cross at 1-800-REDCROSS.

Recovery

  • Contact your insurance agent.
  • File a notice of loss with your insurer.
  • Do not discard any property before your insurance adjuster sees it.
  • Flood damage. Remember that flood insurance only covers direct physical damage from flooding, check with your insurance agent on individual coverage.
  • Document your damage.

  • Take pictures of everything.
  • Make a list of all items with costs if available; make note of brands, model numbers, any additional information that could be helpful.
  • Keep all receipts for any associated costs
  • Call the Development & Neighborhood Services Building Division at 563.326.7745. They can help provide next steps in the recovery process. This may involve a building walk through or damage assessment. Damage assessments are required for all properties in a Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA).
  • Permits may be required for repair/restoration activities.
  • Systems that were turned off will need to be inspected to ensure they are running correctly. (Examples: Gas/Electrical, Fire Alarms, Emergency Exit signs).
  • Rental property may have additional requirements before tenants can return home.
  • A structural engineering assessment may be needed if the facility structure was damaged or the cause for failure of building components.
  • Debris resulting from damage will need to be disposed by a private hauler or at the landfill, unless special collection of debris has been announced for the event.
