Storm Response 07.15.24

July 30, 2024, at Noon
The storm event that hit the area on July 15, 2024, brought back memories of the 2020 Derecho for many. Public Works, Police, and Fire were immediately on scene, handling travel hazards associated with the storm and addressing damaged buildings.

Since our last update, crews have continued removing hazardous conditions presented by trees, limbs, and hangars in parks and the right-of-way and collecting significant tree debris from property owners who experienced substantial tree loss. This work will wrap up this week.

With several properties receiving varying degrees of damage from the storm, Governor Kim Reynolds signed a disaster proclamation for Scott County. The proclamation opened up grant assistance and case management services to affected residents for needs, including temporary housing, food assistance, personal property, and home repairs. In all, the City had to evacuate one residential unit and one multi-family housing unit for unsafe conditions due to the storm. Multiple other single-family homes received significant damages that did not require evacuation. Those recovering are encouraged to use available recovery resources found below.

Solid Waste (garbage, yard, and recycling) Collection

Solid waste collection will continue as scheduled. As you pick up from the storm, please remember to place small debris in an appropriate yard waste bag with sticker. Brush and limbs should be bundled and be no longer than 5 feet for weight more than 50 lbs. Those who received significant tree damage should call public works at 563.326.7923 to make arrangements.

Residents disposing of spoiled food following this week’s storm may have to empty spoiled contents of a refrigerator. If you had spoiled food resulting from power loss, please call Public Works at 563.326.7923 to make arrangements. You will need to empty the contents of the refrigerator into garbage bag(s) and place in your cart. The crew will schedule to stop by to empty the contents of the cart off-schedule as staff is available.

Downed Trees/Large Limbs

Public works crews will be working to clear tree debris from roadways throughout the day. If you have a tree down in the roadway, submit the request to www.davenportiowa.com/pwrs or call us at 563.326.7923.

Private property owners with downed trees on their property will need to secure a contractor for removal. Here’s a link to tips on selecting a contractor.

We remind folks to inspect their trees for “hangers” (hanging limbs) and leaning. Hangers can fall at any time, causing injury or damage. If the tree is leaning, it may have sustained root damage. If you have a hanger over a sidewalk or roadway, please call Public Works at 563.326.7923 or report it at www.davenportiowa.com/pwrs. For private trees, consider contracting a certified arborist to inspect your trees. Find details on selecting a contractor at this link.

Power Outage

For power issues and downed lines contact MidAmerican Energy at 1 (888) 427-5632. You can find the outage map at this link - https://www.midamericanenergy.com/outagewatch/dsk.html.

If you see a downed power line, always assume it’s energized and don’t approach it. Contact MidAmerican Energy, and they will respond to ensure it’s safe.

Roof and other Property Damage

Anyone with questions about damage to their property should consult their insurance company. Be sure to contact your insurance carrier and document the damage before you begin the recovery process. If you need to hire a contractor for tree services or property repairs following the storm, be wary of storm chasers who may knock at your door. Think locally if you need to hire a contractor. Ask for proof of trade or City licensing and insurance. Consider obtaining several detailed estimates before deciding on a contractor. Be sure to ask if there will be a charge for the estimate before you request one. Do not automatically assume that the lowest bid is the best. Find more tips on selecting a reputable contractor at this link.
