It has been a long haul Davenport, but we are getting closer to the finish line on E 53rd St than we were a year ago. Just keep your eye on the prize and stay patient a little longer as the contractor continues to work through the back-to-back-to-back underground and COVID-related construction issues that have arisen over the last year.
The contract has remaining IDOT working days, and the road is estimated to re-open to all travel lanes mid-to-late July. Some punch list items will be completed after the re-opening, but should not require significant travel restrictions.

E 53rd St Project Update. Lane reductions are in place on Tremont north and south of E 53rd St, and a new lane restriction will be placed on E 53rd St near Brady beginning Tuesday, March 30. Tremont lane reductions are for required project water main improvements. The westbound lane reduction near Brady St will reconstruct a local business approach and is necessary for adjacent sidewalk installation. Watch for changing traffic control in the weeks to come, the weather improves, and more construction activities get underway.

E 53rd St Project Update. Utility work continued this winter as weather allowed in preparation for the next phases of work. Road construction is expected to resume sometime next week, the week of March 15, pending weather. Right now, conditions are teetering between good and bad for construction. Soils in adjacent work zones are pretty wet with groundwater and still need a bit of drying out time with some of those more favorable temperatures and little precipitation. Once we can kick into full gear, watch for changing travel patterns in the coming weeks.

Progress on E 53rd St will continue through the spring of 2021. As the construction season winds down, travelers will not see any upcoming traffic control changes until asphalt can be applied between Tremont and Eastern in the spring.
At 70% complete, work on the recreational trail ADA ramps, storm sewers, and other utilities will continue as weather allows through the spring. This work will be followed by installing the sidewalk on the north (or westbound side) of 53rd St, asphalt application between Tremont and Eastern, and reconstruction of the intersection at Tremont and 53rd St.
COVID related delays, subsurface conditions, and coordination of a spider web of ten private utilities, who are responsible in moving their own infrastructure, proved challenging in 2020. Watch for this modernization project to be complete around June of 2021.

Work on E 53rd St started just three short months ago. Here’s a glimpse at some of the progress being made.
Status - a little like home renovation; we have to fix the stuff behind the walls before dressing everything back up. Underground utilities and storm sewer work are continuing at this time. In the next few weeks, we will also be adding a temporary access road to local businesses off of E 53rd while construction continues.

After monitoring construction conditions and travel on Davenport's E 53rd St project over the last few weeks, the City is changing the current detour status beginning Monday, May 4th, for safety concerns. These changes will detour all eastbound traffic off of E 53rd St near Brady St. Two routes are available: Brady to Veterans Memorial Parkway, to Eastern Ave, to E 53rd St or Welcome Way to Kimberly Rd to Eastern Ave, to E 53rd St. One lane of westbound travel through the construction zone will remain.
While some will experience a little more inconvenience, everyone will experience safer travel conditions and fewer delays.
Please be patient as we continue to improve this significant roadway.
Watch for later traffic control changes as work on the southern half of E 53rd St between Brady and Eastern switches to the northern half in a few months.
04/16/20
Work began on E 53rd St earlier in the week. A modification in the schedule, however, has changed initial travel plans.
For approximately the next three weeks, eastbound E 53rd St west of Brady will be detoured at Welcome Way, to 46th St, to Tremont, to E 53rd St. This detour is necessary for work being performed adjacent to the E 53rd St median between Brady and Eckstein Dr.
Once this early work near the median is complete, one lane of travel for E 53rd St will be opened up.
Please bear with us as the much-needed improvements to this road get underway.

E 53rd St will be reduced to one lane of travel in each direction between Brady and Eastern beginning the week of April 13th. The lane reductions are necessary for street reconstruction and widening, along with stormwater and utility improvements.
Businesses located along this stretch will be accessible for the duration of construction.
This project will start in the south/eastbound lanes and then flip to the north/westbound lanes as work progresses.
Work is estimated to be substantially complete in Dec 2020, pending weather and subsurface conditions. Please bear with us as we make these improvements.
Consider an alternate route as traffic delays are likely.

The 53rd St Reconstruction and Widening Project will kick-off the 2020 Construction Season soon.
With Council approval to award a contract on Feb 26, pre-construction meetings will be held to develop traffic plans, and a schedule for complete reconstruction and widening of E 53rd St between Brady and Eastern will begin.
Once works gets underway, motorists should expect delays or consider an alternate route while we widen the street to install a dedicated turn-lane, install all new pavement and base, and add pedestrian and shared-use paths to the north and south of the road. Access to businesses within the corridor will be maintained during construction.
Stormwater improvements will also be installed as part of the project.
A smoother, less congested roadway lays ahead. Be on the look-out for more details as construction planning progresses.
